Mark McClelland Professional Bass Player

Mark has played bass professionally since 2004 moving effortlessly between the styles and worlds of blues, jazz, rock, pop, funk, electronica and heavy metal. In the summer of 2019 he cemented his reputation in London when he played a total of 24 hours at the world record breaking non stop 100 hours jam at The Blues Kitchen in Camden Town, and was on stage for the finale as the clock ticked down to zero. Even before this he was well known through a variety of musical scenes in the city and had established himself as an in demand session player and dep of choice for many live acts. He has also formed his own bands which have performed all over the city and beyond. You can read about the whole journey in the truly epic Mark's Diaries. This blog began in 2014 when he attempted to play on the professional scene on the Costa Blanca in Spain for the summer.

That episode led directly to a move to London, which eventually led to The Diaries, an internationally touring songwriting project with Maja. Read our story below.

Capturing my bass side

These recordings showcase Mark's ability to record one-take pieces while retaining all the excitement and immediacy of live performance. Get a close up view of his trademark blistering playing and soloing on an array of styles through home recordings. There are also many cuts from live shows taking us through his London Odyssey including songs from jazz band The Bright Sides and a peek at his duo collaboration with Brazilian blues rock star Fred Pala.

In session

As well as playing and recording with different artists, Mark has also written and co-written a number of songs, some of which are featured in this playlist with of course himself on bass. From the debut album of Madrid based fun time pop punk band Drunken Monkees we have A Listing and Bond, Bauer Or Bourne. Let's Have A Party and These Are The Days are his own wonderfully joyous studio recordings, while others come from Irish pop band Fly On The Wall.
